Spring Salmon/Chinook migrate to the prince rupert area to gain the required weight to swim up the rivers of the BC Coastline. Spring salmon live from three to seven years and weigh an average of 25-40 pounds; the largest have been reported at almost 100 pounds. Also called Chinooks, Kings or Tyees, they have black gums and a silver, spotted tail. They are blue-green on the back and top of the head, with silvery sides and white bellies. They have black spots on the upper half of the body and have a gray/black mouth. They are the largest and most prized of the North Coast game fish.

Fishing for Coho Salmon is very exciting in Prince Rupert offering huge action and excellent tasting salmon. Coho Salmon live for three years and can average 10-18 pounds. They are very aggressive, which makes for a fantastic fight when you reel them in. You know them by their white gums, black tongues and they have a few spots on the upper part of their bodies, Their tails are wide based and silver-coloured and their dorsals are silver and metallic blue.

Halibut is the largest of the flatfish. While they have been recorded at depths of more the 3,000 feet, most are caught at between 95 to 1,000 feet, They can reach weights over 500 pounds and be more than 8 feet long, but averages are much smaller smaller. Halibut is a highly regarded food fish and like flounder, both eyes of the adult migrate to the right side of the head.

Lingcod can weigh in at up to 60 pounds, but most average at 30-40 pounds. The lingcod has a large head, a big mouth, and large teeth. Its elongated body tends to narrow toward the tail. It has one long dorsal fin and a notch separates the spinous and soft-rayed parts. Its back tends to be dark gray, brown or a greenish color, with varying degrees of mottling or spotting along the upper back. Lingcod can reach up to 5 feet in length.

Whale Watching/Wildlife viewing

The Prince Rupert area has an abundance of wildlife you can view from the water. Humpback whales migrate from warmer waters to the North West Coast to feed for the summer! There’s also the magnificent Orca, with transient and resident pods in the area, it’s always a special day when you get a chance to see them! There’s also sea lions, seals and eagles amongst other species that call the area home! Getting a chance to see any of these creatures is a special occasion! Tours are approximately 8 hrs and are $1200 for up to four people!
